Dr. Atef Iskandar

Godfather of SURPS & Honorary Chair (Posthumous)

FRCOG

Dr. Atef Iskandar was a distinguished Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, whose career was marked by clinical excellence, humility, and lifelong dedication to teaching and mentorship. He was widely respected as a pioneer in pelvic floor and urogynecology services within teaching hospitals in Egypt and a role model to generations of trainees and colleagues. He gained valuable international clinical experience in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, followed by extensive training and practice in the United Kingdom between 1992 and 1998, working at Hastings Hospital, Ipswich Hospital, and Royal Stoke University Hospital. These years shaped his strong evidence-based clinical approach and advanced surgical skills in obstetrics and gynaecology. Upon his return to Egypt, he served as a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at El-Mataria Teaching Hospital - General Organization for Teaching Hospitals and Institutes (GOTHI), where he spent many years in active clinical service. He was the founder of the Pelvic Floor and Urogynaecology Surgery Unit and a key contributor to the development of departmental OBGYN protocols as well as department statistics collection & data analysis. Over many years, he played a central role in the high-volume clinical work of the OBGYN Unit at MTH, contributing consistently to outpatient services, major and minor gynaecological surgeries, and teaching activities, while supporting structured clinical pathways and surgical training. In parallel, he maintained a reputable private practice, known for compassionate, ethical, and patient-centered care, and remained a trusted mentor to younger colleagues throughout his career. From 2014 to 2024, he was an active faculty member in pelvic floor and urogynecology workshops by the ERC-RCOG, dedicating significant effort to hands-on surgical education and mentorship. Dr. Atef Iskandar was known not only for his scientific contributions but also for his kindness, generosity, and humility. He believed deeply that teaching and supporting others were lifelong responsibilities and never hesitated to guide, assist, and encourage his colleagues and trainees. He passed away on 25 February 2025 after a courageous battle with illness. His scientific legacy, ethical values, and human impact remain deeply rooted in the generations he taught and inspired.
